The arrival of a new puppy in the home is an exciting time for all concerned, however, there are lots of things to consider at this early stage and feeding your puppy is an important aspect which should not be overlooked.

When you bring your puppy home he will already be weaned on to solid food, if you decide to change your puppy’s diet then this should be done gradually over a few days. Immediately changing his diet could upset your puppy’s digestion or deter him from eating. The breeder may have provided you with some food which should be used at first and then mixed into his new food for the first few days until your puppy has settled into his new home. Gradually increase the amount of the new food he gets and decrease his old diet.

Your puppy’s digestive system is used to receiving small amounts of food on a regular basis; therefore it is advisable to feed your puppy small amounts four times a day to avoid any upsets. As his appetite increases, which is usually at about 12 weeks of age, his meals can be reduced to 3 times a day and by 6 months of age you will be able to feed twice a day.

To help encourage your puppy to get into a regular feeding routine it is important not to feed between meals or to give titbits, this will also prevent bad habits and ensure that the puppy does not become overweight. It is of course also essential that your puppy has access to fresh, clean water at all times.

Feeding your puppy correctly is essential to support resistance to the initial challenges of life, ensuring long-term health and providing a sound basis for adulthood. As he is growing his nutritional requirements are higher than that of an adult dog and it is vital that he receives all the nutrients required for growth and development. Ensuring that your puppy grows steadily so that he does not develop too quickly for his bone growth should also be taken into account.
