The fourth round of the Chudleys Gundog Championship took place at the Lowther Show on the 11th and 12th August.
After three previous rounds of exciting scurry action, talented handlers and their skilled dogs arrived at Lowther Castle to compete for some of the last places in the grand final, which takes place at the Midland Game Fair on the 16th September.
Countryside enthusiasts packed out the course eagerly waiting to see the gundogs in action. Their patience wasn’t disappointed, as everyone in attendance was treated to some first-class, nail-biting display of stamina and skill.
As crowds pack out the Lowther Show, handlers and their gundogs were ready for some intense competition.
On the first day of competition it was Trevor Linfoot with Bob who took home top honours in the Victor Ludorum to qualify for the Gran Final with his Retriever Bob in an amazing time of 1.38.28 seconds. Simon Siddons took top spot with his Spaniel Sam to also qualify for the grand final in a time of 2.11.52 seconds.
In the Working Test it was J. Johnson with Bullet who came in first place with a time of 41.46. Lucy Blizard with Ernie finished in second place with a time of 1.11.00 seconds.
The junior handlers were also ready to go head-head in a bid of going to the Grand Finals next month. At the end of the day it was Phoebe with Pip in a time of 1.10.45 seconds who took first place and Hannah Robson with Fen in 1.11.00 in second place.
Stand out performances throughout the day came from Rob Bunning and Drake who finished within the top three in several classes, including Partridge Pen, Pick n Mix, Short Fence, Duck Distraction and Up and Over.
The competition started to heat up on the second day of the Lowther Show.
As the Sunday of the Lowther Show got underway it was another day of scurry action. With the Grand Final just weeks away, this was one of the last remaining opportunities to secure their place in the Championship Grand Final. Ros McKilroy with Duke was the final qualifier in the scurries with a time of 1.30.90 seconds.
Vicky Stanley with Pip in 1.31.90 seconds and John Close with Bernie in 1.46.17 seconds were the quickest in the working test, securing their place at the Midland Game Fair.
The last two junior qualifying spots for the Grand Final went to Lexi Moore with Chance in 1.03.99 seconds and Jacob Grey with Roxy in 1.07.80 seconds.
With all but 4 places filled, the Chudleys Gundog Championship Grand Final is sure to be an incredible weekend of competition.
Laura Bacon, Gundog Organiser for Countryman Fairs and Chudleys said: “I am truly overwhelmed by the level of entries we have experienced this year. We’ve had some tremendous support throughout the season and we have seen lots of new people as well as old familiar faces participate and qualify for the Grand Final. We’ve seen breakthroughs too with handlers and dogs who have been trying to qualify for many years who have finally secured a spot in the final. We’re also excited for the ladies this year too, quite a number of them have qualified for the final. It just shows that hard work, dedication and such great support from the community and our sponsors goes a long way in developing and growing both individuals and our sport. I can't wait for next month!”
