If your gundog becomes less active, it may be beneficial to switch to a feed that provides fewer calories to avoid unwanted weight gain. Workloads can decrease for a variety of reasons; during the off-season when the dogs are not working weekly, mid-season time off due to injury or when your dog retires from working completely.
It is important to consider your dog’s workload and how they naturally maintain their weight before adjusting their calorie intake. In some dogs, as workload decreases so does the calorie requirement and so rather than reducing the amount of feed, it may be more beneficial to change from a high calorie, high protein diet such as Chudleys Working Crunch to one formulated for a lesser workload like Chudleys Lite which is ideally suited to overweight dogs, or those that gain weight easily.
If you would like further advice on feeding your working dog, the Chudleys nutritional helpline is open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday. Please call 01832 737 300 and we’ll be happy to help.
