KEY NUTRIENTS TO SUSTAIN A HEALTHY WORKING DOG

Chudleys canine nutritionists provide expert advice on what working dogs require nutritionally to sustain them during a busy days work.

Protein

Quality rather than quantity is key. High quality protein provides the crucial building blocks for muscle development, muscle repair and recovery functions. A mix of protein sources is the most efficient way of providing your dog with the right amounts of essential amino acids – a combination of grains, meat and fish is the best option.

Remember: Increased workloads require an increase in protein levels.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are important to fuel dogs when they need to sprint or work quickly. Dogs can break down carbohydrates easily and can store excess in muscle for use later on.

Remember: The more work a dog is doing, the higher the requirement for carbohydrates.

Fat

Fat provides dogs with a source of slow release energy. Fat is broken down easily and has higher energy content than protein and carbs, which is important for working dogs. High fat diets are often beneficial for active working dogs.

Essential Fatty Acids

The correct ratio of omega-3 to 6 is important in any animal’s diet. Omega-3 can aid in flexibility of the joints, reduce stiffness in joints, as well as having hormonal and cell functions. Ingredients high in omega-3 include salmon oil, full fat linseed and green-lipped muscle. Omega-6 fatty acids can enhance the dog’s skin and coat.

Vitamins, Minerals & Trace Elements

Vitamins, minerals and trace elements are important in providing a nutritionally balanced diet. They are often required for the utilisation of other parts of the diet.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are included in Chudleys feed to help to neutralise free radicals produced during exercise. Vitamins C and E are powerful antioxidants, with protected sources of antioxidants being more powerful.
